All About Spix Macaw: Characteristics, Care, and Habitat

Appearance

  • Smallest macaw species, averaging around 22 inches (56 cm) in length.
  • Striking plumage with a beautiful blue gradient:
    • Dull blue with a faint greenish tinge on the breast and abdomen.
    • Upper body, wings, and tail are a deeper, more vibrant blue.
    • Dark gray, featherless skin around the eyes and lores (area between beak and eye).
  • Pale yellow irises.
  • Black, curved beak.
  • Sexes are nearly identical, with males being slightly larger than females.

Behaviour of Spix Macaw

  • Highly social birds that lived in small family groups or pairs in the wild (unfortunately, no longer found in the wild).
  • Diurnal (active during the day), moving with the availability of food and nesting sites.
  • Shy and would fly away from potential threats.
  • Considered to be intelligent birds with some ability to mimic sounds, though not as well-known for this compared to other macaws.

Habitat of Spix Macaw

  • Historically found in the Caatinga biome of northeastern Brazil, a dry thorn forest with seasonal waterways.
  • Reliant on tall Caraibeira trees for nesting and food (seeds from the tree pods).

Diet of Spix Macaw

  • Primarily ate seeds, fruits, and flowers in the wild.
  • In captivity, their diet would likely consist of a specialized seed mix, nuts, and fruits.

Lifespan of Spix Macaw

  • Estimated lifespan in the wild is around 30 years.
  • In captivity, they could potentially live even longer for about 50+ years with proper care.
